The political science major in me just can't stay away from reading the news, especially about the strike in France right now. And I can't help but get more and more annoyed at the french with every story I read, every time some 'entitled' bull comes tumbling out of someone's mouth I just want to run screaming through the streets. This is ridiculous. Maybe I'm more annoyed because I've been reading the news more often, or because it is about to actually affect me in the coming weeks (kids going on a 2 week school break) if it doesn't end, maybe the political scientist in me knows that the government is right and is annoyed at the persistence of the populace, or maybe the american in me just dislikes strikes and extremists in general, especially ignorant ones.
Along with the continuous rolling strikes, they have declared two more days of strikes. Luckily one is during the school break, so it won't affect me too much, and one is on a Saturday. Just a call to arms for 2 days since the strike hasn't actually stopped.
Here is the article that really had me in a tizzy --> French strike to save 'birthright' of benefits. Because their grandparents fought for retirement at 60, forget the longer life spans and mushroomed age populace where the younger people won't be able to support the larger older community. Or them telling the government to find another way to pay for pensions. How about this, the government could just run out of money and then none of you would get anything. How does that work for you? Or take away your enormously long vacations. SERIOUSLY. 62. Stop complaining, it isn't that bad. It is 67 in the states and 65 in England.
Police break through key blockade at an oil refinery outside of Paris. This is the key issue that the strikes are causing, major gas shortages. There are queues for miles to stations that have already run out of petrol. It seems like everything is stopping because of that. Planes can't leave, trucks can't drive, people can't get anywhere. And next week is the start of a 2 week school break where a lot of people had travel plans that are now impossible.
French government orders Senate to rush through pension-reform bill
And we have the problem with socialism. People will always want more than they can have.
I'm still to scared to bring up the topic with french people to see what they think :P
